The When And The Why Of Concrete Foundation Cracks
The problem with concrete is it normally cracks. Look at just about any wall in a basement, patio, garage floor, etc. and you will notice them. The good news is the majority of cracks in concrete walls are a result of shrinkage, not structural issues. Concrete shrinks as a result of the drying process during construction and a crack forms as a result. Common areas of cracking in a poured concrete basement wall are:

Foundation Crack Repair kits are available in 5', 10', or 30' sizes for the repair of leaking basement cracks. Foundation crack repair kits fill concrete cracks by using urethane, or sometimes epoxy, which is pushed or "injected" into the concrete crack thus repairing the leaking crack. We usually recommend urethane injection over epoxy injection for repairing leaking cracks because of its ability to expand in the crack, fill every crevice, and not drain out into the substrate like epoxy can do. With an INSTRUCTIONAL CD included, our DIY concrete crack repair kits are very easy to use and effective in stopping leaks in concrete foundation cracks. The only tool needed will be a standard household caulking gun. The kits are packaged with construction grade non-shrink urethane materials. The urethane activates on less than the 1% moisture that is contained in the concrete already by nature, no need to add water to the crack. The reaction takes a minimum of 20 minutes to complete giving plenty of time to fill the foundation crack with product. Again, the urethane injection process will penetrate the thinnest of concrete foundation cracks.

DIY Concrete Foundation Crack Repair
Leaking cracks in basement walls can be repaired quickly and inexpensively using DIY Basement Oasis's concrete crack repair kits. With detailed instructions, quality repair materials, and easy to use packaging a 10 concrete crack can be repaired with about one hour of labor. A concrete foundation cracks 99.9% of the time. Not all concrete foundation cracks leak, but when water is occurring in the basement the first thing to consider is water coming through the walls. We recommend going with the easiest and least expensive repair first. Before having a professional contractor install an expensive exterior or interior water drainage system costing thousands of dollars, consider repairing concrete cracks using our urethane crack injection.
Urethane crack injection is a fast, efficient and economical process for repairing leaks in basement foundation walls. The kits we provide use the same, not similar, materials used by professional waterproofers. The process first involves mixing a two-part paste together, which will dam up the crack and attach surface ports or straws to the wall. Once the paste has hardened, which usually takes 2-3 hours, the urethane tube is placed in a caulk gun and beginning with the port closest to the bottom of the wall urethane is injected. The urethane is formulated to enter the smallest of cracks. If water can come out of the crack, our Flex Foam can go in. Once in the wall, the urethane contacts the humidity in the wall and expands 800% it's size entering every crevice as well as out the back of the concrete foundation crack. The Flex Foam will never shrink and can accommodate movement in the wall. For more details on the concrete crack injection process see below.
Note: Shrinkage cracks in walls are typically vertical though cracks underneath widows may angle up to 45 degrees. Cracks which are horizontal, offset, or wider than 3/8” may indicate structural issues and we recommend calling our technical department.
The Process of Concrete Foundation Crack Repair
Two points to immediately mention because of the fluidness of both the foam and epoxy:
1. Our injection material will travel through the smallest of cracks
2. The concrete foundation crack will be completely filled and permanently repaired when injected as directed
The process for injection of concrete foundation cracks is quite simple.
1. Ports or “straws” are epoxied or “glued” to the wall every 8” or so. No drilling is required. The remainder of the crack is sealed off with the same epoxy used to attach the ports to the wall. We call this epoxy surface seal. For a typical crack applying ports and sealing the crack with epoxy should take about 20-30 minutes.
2. Wait for the surface seal epoxy to dry. Drying should take 90-120 minutes. The surface seal has dried efficiently when it can no longer be dented with a fingernail.
3. Optional and not to be done when using epoxy - add water to the crack with a household water bottle using the type with the round nozzle. The reason step 3 is optional is because unless the outside ground is bone dry the moisture in the wall will be enough to enhance the foaming action. It is beneficial to add water to cracks credit card size or wider.
4. Using a caulking gun inject foam into the crack starting at the bottom port and moving up the wall. That’s it. Simple and absolute.
The Products

Our removable surface seal follows the same steps as our standard surface seal through the injection of urethane or epoxy. The difference comes at the end of the process. When injection is complete you can then peel off the any evidence of repair. The epoxy and ports are removed completely by simply pulling the epoxy strip off the wall. The repair is hidden which is especially helpful during real estate transactions.
The foam used in our kits is also contractor grade and provides three significant benefits not immediately apparent. First, our foam does not react immediately with water giving it time to penetrate the wall before it thickens. This insures proper filling. Secondly, our foam expands many times its size allowing it to fill larger voids without the need for additional material and added expense. Finally, our foam will not shrink after filling the void, as many urethanes will do. Shrinkage will negate the waterproofing quality of the foam.
Our epoxy is extremely strong, but more importantly, very thin upon injection. The thinness of the epoxy is important in making the injection process much more user friendly. Thick epoxies can cause blowouts of the surface seal effectively stopping the process.
